Around the Country

Eastern Cape

Digital Smart Citizenship

2015 - Present

The Eastern Cape has a population of 6,562 million (2011). Its capital is Bhisho, but its two largest cities are East London and Port Elizabeth. The Eastern Cape has a well advanced economy in terms of natural and cultural aspects in this province.

It got Geekulcha in 2015 when the Geekulcha female wing helped host Hackathon in Eastern London. Since then, we had:

  • Cortex Hub Hackathon
  • Internet Governance symposium with ZADNA
  • Budget Dataquest with National Treasury
  • Digital Literacy Focus Group and Training

Free State

Civic Tech Engagements

2019 - Present

Its capital is Bloemfontein, which is also South Africa's judicial capital. Its historical origins lie in the republic called the Orange Free State and later Orange Free State Province. It has an estimated population of 2 745 590 people.

We had always wanted to do stuff in the Free State but resources mostly did not allow. With chance, we did some of these:

  • IoTSAChallenge for SqwidNet
  • Budget Dataquest with National Treasury
  • Digital Literacy Focus Group and Training

Gauteng

Where it all begun

2013 - Present

Gauteng is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. The name in Sotho-Tswana means "place of gold." Situated in the Highveld, Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa, accounting for only 1.5% of the land area.

With the support of mLab Southern Africa, Geekulcha was at The Innovation Hub's science park.
